Fortaleza de Sagres

Sagres, a crossroads between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, a port for fishermen and traders from various nations, but also an area plagued by privateers. The imposing fortification of Sagres is the human extension of the natural rock and was for centuries the main battleground of a geo-strategic maritime defensive system.

The Portuguese expansion policy in the 15th and 16th centuries led to the foundation of Vila do Infante. Thus, Vila do Infante and Sagres merge in the course of time.

Integrating the Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park, the Sagres Promontory has an interesting faunal and floristic biodiversity and unique endemisms that all visitors can observe.

Sagres, a place of memory where nature, the sacred and man have always been combined in a symbiotic way, generating religious cults and historical, political, tourist myths, deserves your visit!
